Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to our frequently asked questions, simply click the link below that relates to your enquiry.
What size should a digital photo be for a good result on a canvas?
We recommend that your digital picture is at least 250 KB for it to be suitable for printing onto a canvas. However, the larger the picture, the better the result. It is wise to set your camera to the largest possible resolution.
How can I check the size of my picture on a computer?
To check the size of your image move the mouse over the picture and press the right hand mouse button. If you now click ‘properties’ this will tell you the size of your image. The size will be displayed as either kbs or mbs. 1 MB is 1000 KB.
What if my image is too small what can I do about it?
There can be several reasons why your image is too small to print onto a canvas for example:
* You can have cropped or edited the picture yourself, which made the file too small.* Sometimes when you email a file the file size is decreased. Outlook is a good example of this. When using outlook to send a picture the software will shrink the image so it is easier to email.* Pictures on FaceBook, Twitter or other social networks are often too small because they are saved in a smaller resolution.
Don’t worry if all of your pictures are too small, you can use them to make a fun collage. We recommend you use a free easy to use online photo collage maker such as www.fotor.com. Once you have created your collage you can save it to your computer and then upload to our canvas making software. This will allow you to use smaller pictures. Pictures from your mobile phone are perfect for this!
Can I use pictures from a mobile phone or the internet?
The quality of pictures taken by mobile phones is getting better and better; however, sometimes they are still too small for a good result on canvas. If this is the case then can still use them to make a collage. We recommend you use a free easy to use online photo collage maker such as www.fotor.com. Once you have created your collage you can save it to your computer and upload to our canvas making software.
Similarly pictures from the internet can also be too small for a good result. You can check the size of the image by moving your mouse over the image and clicking the right hand mouse button and selecting ‘properties’. The image should be at least 250 KB to get a good result on a printed canvas.
Can I use other files than jpegs such as text files or a pdf?
Generally we would recommend using jpegs. If you have an image in a different file format we would suggest contacting us so that we can check that it will be suitable for printing.

How do I crop my picture? How does the cropping system work?
Our canvasses are either 20 mm or 38 mm deep and are made from finger jointed FSC Certified Baltic pine. Part of the picture will wrap around the sides of the canvas. It might be the case that essential parts of the picture end up on the sides. You can use our cropping system to prevent this. You can either leave enough of the image so the parts that are wrapped around the sides are not essential parts of your image or if you would like the complete image on the face of your canvas please advise in the Special instructions box at the checkout and our designers will mirror the perimeter of your image so the whole image appears on the face of your canvas.
The picture does not really fit the canvas what do I do now?
When we first began our company it was apparent that our competitors were trying to shoe horn their customer’s images into their standard range of frames. We thought this unfair. We designed our software so that your picture and the pink lines that represent the frame can both be changed independently of each other. In this way you should be able to get the perfect fit. Don’t worry if you think you may lose some essential parts of your image around the frame. Just let us know in the Special instructions box at the checkout and our designers will mirror the perimeter of your image so the whole image appears on the face of your canvas.

What is the quality of your canvasses at Custom Canvas?
We only use the very best premium quality materials. Your pictures are important to you so we want to give you the best product we can. In every stage of production we aim for the best quality possible.Stretcher bars: we use either 20 mm or 38 mm deep and are made from finger jointed FSC Certified Baltic pine. This is specially manufactured with a small lip that raises the canvas off the wood ensuring the minimum contact between the wood and the canvas. Unlike many of our competitors we do not use cheap mdf.
Canvas material: We use high quality 330gsm polycotton canvas fabric which has a high linen weave and gives a high brilliance photo quality print, and will withstand cracking or abrasion over time.
Inks: We only use original manufacturers inks as we work with the most modern and colour-correct print techniques. Our inks are UV-resistant and do not discolour in the sun.
Laminate: We laminate your canvas prints with our satin coat acrylic varnish which gives a satin smooth, natural looking finish. It preserves and enhances your canvas photo prints further reducing the effect of damaging UV light. Once coated your canvas becomes resistant to airborne moisture, finger marks, scratching and abrasion. It can be wiped with a damp cloth to clean it. While some of our competitors may argue their canvases do not require lamination for us coating your treasured pictures is a must.
Finishing: All our canvases are hand stretched and are finished with tape to the reverse to give a neat finish. A hanger is then screwed to the back so it is ready to hang once you receive it. Our aim is simple; we want to make you super happy with your own custom canvas that will adorn a wall in your home for years and years to come.
Can the canvas be used outside?
The simply answer is no. Although the laminate we use offers some protection against moisture the wood and canvas will become saturated with prolonged exposure to the elements.
